On the morning of February 9, 1942, a Japanese and American fighter plane dogfight ended just above the Mariveles volcano on the Bataan Peninsula of the Philippines. Initial efforts to recover the remains of either pilot failed and for nearly 7 decades those remains lay undisturbed.
