The Maywood Bataan Day Organization joins with the friends and family of Herbert C. “Bud” Kirchhoff, Jr. in mourning his passing on June 10, 2015. Herbert was a member of Co. B of the 192nd Tank Battalion and was a resident of Maywood. He survived the Battle of Bataan, the Death March, POW prison camps, Hell Ships and slave labor camps in Japan. At the time of his liberation in 1945, he told of hearing the “big boom” of the atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki, 75 miles from his last prison camp.
